Finnbarr is currently progressing within the Wellington Phoenix environment and recently made his debut for the reserves. His immediate ambition remains to continue progressing through the Phoenix pathway and ultimately pursue professional football. The U.S. college pathway is therefore not about replacing that ambition, but creating another strong option where Finnbarr can continue developing as a footballer, gain an education and maintain a pathway towards the professional game.

From our discussion, Finnbarr already possesses many of the characteristics that should help him transition successfully into the U.S. college environment. He has lived away from home from a young age, has demonstrated considerable resilience and independence, takes his academics seriously and has shown a strong commitment to his football development. His experiences within the Phoenix environment have already required him to compete for opportunities, respond to feedback and manage the pressures that come with high-performance sport. These experiences should put him in a strong position should he eventually make the transition to the United States.

One of the most important areas we discussed was how significantly the U.S. college soccer recruiting landscape has changed. NCAA Division I has become particularly competitive due to changes affecting roster sizes and additional eligibility for existing college athletes. As a result, there are fewer roster positions available to incoming international players and many programs are making recruiting decisions well in advance. This means timing and roster availability can now be just as important as a player's football ability. For that reason, our recommendation is to begin building Finnbarr's U.S. opportunities now rather than waiting until a final decision has been made regarding his pathway in New Zealand.

It will also be extremely important for Finnbarr and the family to approach the process with an open mind regarding the different college pathways available. We would not recommend restricting the search solely to NCAA Division I. We would like to explore appropriate opportunities across NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NAIA and Junior College. There are excellent football programs and development environments across each of these pathways, and the division attached to the school should not be the sole factor when making a decision.

Our priority will be finding an environment where the coach genuinely believes Finnbarr can make an impact, where the financial package works for the family and where the football culture, coaching, facilities, training schedule and overall environment provide Finnbarr with the opportunity to continue developing. We also want to understand each coach's track record of developing players and what opportunities may exist beyond college. The objective is to find the right football and personal environment rather than simply chasing the biggest name or highest division.

We also discussed the possibility that Finnbarr's first college may not necessarily be his final college. The transfer system is now a major part of U.S. college sport. If Finnbarr enters the system, performs consistently, becomes bigger, faster and stronger, develops better footage and proves himself against American competition, he may create opportunities to transfer into an even higher-level program. The focus should therefore be on finding the right starting point where he can play, develop and make an impact.

From a financial perspective, the family should prepare for a budget of approximately USD $15,000 for Finnbarr's first year at a four-year university after scholarship. For a Junior College pathway, we would look at approximately USD $5,000 to $12,000 for the first year after scholarship. These figures provide us with a realistic framework when speaking with coaches and assessing which opportunities make financial sense for the family.

It is also important to understand that the first-year cost does not necessarily represent what Finnbarr will pay every year. Scholarships can increase from year to year as an athlete proves himself within the program, develops as a player and becomes more valuable to the team. Our objective would be to continue helping Finnbarr assess his position and opportunities as he progresses, whether that means negotiating increased support within his existing program or considering a transfer if a stronger football and financial opportunity becomes available.

Our standard Platform Sports service fee is NZD $8,500 upfront. However, because of our relationship with Wellington Phoenix and our desire to support Finnbarr through this opportunity, we have offered the family a significantly reduced and more flexible arrangement. The structure offered is NZD $3,600 including GST to commence the process, followed by a further NZD $3,600 once Finnbarr receives his I-20 as part of the college acceptance process.

An important part of this arrangement is the flexibility it gives Finnbarr. If we commence the recruitment process and Finnbarr subsequently receives an opportunity to continue progressing with the Phoenix reserves, we can pause his U.S. process. If it makes more sense to target a 2028 college intake instead of 2027, we can adjust the timeline without charging the family an additional service fee simply because his recruitment has been delayed. If Finnbarr ultimately decides that the U.S. college pathway is not for him, the family would not be required to make the second NZD $3,600 payment.

Once the family decides to proceed, our intention is to fast-track Finnbarr's preparation. We will work on preparing and optimising his football video for the U.S. college market, build his recruiting profile, complete his academic and GPA assessment, provide guidance around NCAA registration and eligibility and connect him directly with our soccer placement team. From there, we can begin targeted outreach to appropriate college coaches, facilitate coach conversations and help Finnbarr and the family assess the opportunities that develop. Given the current recruiting environment, we would like to move quickly so that his profile and footage can begin reaching coaches as soon as possible.

Platform Sports will also support the family through the wider process, including understanding offers, applications, admissions, insurance, the transition to the United States and the practical considerations that come with moving overseas. Our involvement does not finish when Finnbarr commits to a college. We continue supporting our athletes once they arrive in America and throughout their college journey, including helping with challenges involving college life, coaches, homesickness, transfers and future opportunities.

The recommended next step is therefore to begin creating Finnbarr's U.S. opportunities while continuing to keep his Phoenix pathway completely open. Starting the college process does not mean Finnbarr is committing to leave New Zealand. It simply gives him and the family more options. If the right opportunity presents itself for 2027, we can assess it together. If continuing with Phoenix and targeting 2028 becomes the better option, we can adjust accordingly. The objective is to create as many strong opportunities as possible so that, when the time comes to make a decision, Finnbarr and his family are choosing between good options rather than trying to create them at the last minute.
